outline:
Based on a true story, the film is an historical drama adapted from a very popular Chinese novel from the 16th Century, "Liao Fan's Four Lessons". The book was written by Liao-Fan Yuan himself in order to teach his son, Tian-Chi Yuan, how to recognize the true face of destiny, tell good from bad, correct one's faults and practice kind deeds. It also provided living proof of the rewards and outcomes of people who practiced kind deeds and cultivated virtue and humility. Relating from his own experience at changing destiny, Mr. Yuan himself was a living embodiment of his teachings.
Pitch/synopsis:
China, almost 500 years ago. Yuan Liaofan, a capable student dreaming of a bright future, suddenly gives up all his ambitions the day he learns from a fortune teller that he is doomed to die young and to be heirless. Falling into depression and passivity, he loses all interest in life and follows his fate until he unexpectedly meets a meditation master that explains him how to change his original destiny and re-create his future. Following the master's advice, he finally attains happiness, long life, and a son... Worrying then about his son's future, but to help him improve it, Liao Fan decides to tell him his own story, unveiling his 4 life-changing principles... The 4 lessons of Liao Fan...

Typical of popular Chinese literature in the 16th Century, "Liao Fan's Four Lessons" is a wonderful story which conveys on a light, humoristic tone a message of hope that helps to feel more open and confident towards life. Taking place at a period when Chinese culture was still strongly rooted in popular beliefs, folklore and traditions, "Liao Fan's Four Lessons" teaches us precious lessons of wisdom and compassion, questioning the real power of destiny over free will.
