Project outline:

A patchwork film, anti-chronological. A mosaic of several interrelated characters. "Random" has several dramatic twists. The film is a meditation on luck, misfortune, hazard and fate.

Pitch/synopsis:

"Random" relates the lives of several independent characters who unexpectedly connect to each other on the occasion of a terrible car accident. The film starts with the accident, then goes back in time, 10 years before, revealing the complex chain of causes and effects that will lead some characters to a tragic end...

Author's comments:

This film project dates back to the early nineties. I've often talked to several persons about it and the project has been protected and copyrighted. But since then, I haven't really worked on it, being busy on other important stuffs. Anyway, last year was released on theatres a very good film following almost the same narrative structure and story plot: "Crash" from Paul Haggis, who won the Best Picture Academy Award.

Taking into account the success of "Crash", we may assume that my film project, "Random", is not feasible anymore.

Actually, if the story plot looks similar at first sight, the main message of the film is quite different, even the opposite. Paul Haggis is mostly interested in the interracial conflicts and tensions in LA, adopting a sociological approach to his characters. On the contrary, "Random", which goes back farther in time (10 years ago and not only 24 hours like in "Crash"), adopts a more psychological approach, taking more time to follow the protagonists in their daily life, showing how they evolve and change in time, facing situations and life choices that may have some heavy consequences in the future. The film allows us to understand more deeply the psychology of each protagonist and their motivations in life. We have time to get emotionally involved with them, sharing their joy and misfortunes.

The main questions emphasized in the film are: "What is destiny? Does fate exist? How could we influence and shape our own destiny? Why some innocent persons, often meritorious, can die tragically in an accident, while some other persons, though responsible for the accident, can miraculously escape death? Why a lucky fate for one, an unlucky fate for another? What is the relation between justice, moral and destiny?"

The film tries to find some answers to these metaphysical questions by going back in time, 10 years before the accident, in order to observe, study and analyse almost "scientifically" the slightest details of the lives of each protagonist: their good and bad deeds, their personal goals, their evolution, the choices they make, the interweaving of decisions that finally causes their death or helps them to survive the car crash. The film scrutinizes the complex chain of causes, conditions and effects that will lead to the car accident, trying to find some relevant, logical or rational explanations to what will happen. Any minor details may count. The most trivial decisions may radically change their destiny.

"What is the power of free will to counterbalance fate? Can we escape our destiny?" That's the other topical questions covered by the film, quite far from Paul Haggis' concerns in his film "Crash".

For these reasons, I think that "Random" remains a very interesting film project. If we make some changes, reshaping the main story plot, adding new ideas, it may be very profitable to reactivate the project with the support of a good producer.
